That music remains not only ahead of its time, but timeless. Its influence across contemporary music spans genres - records like "Bitches Brew", "A Tribute to Jack Johnson", "Live-Evil", "On the Corner", "Dark Magus", "Agharta", and "Pangaea" have inspired artists from Public Enemy to Parliament-Funkadelic to Brian Eno to Radiohead to The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and hundreds of others. Collectively, these men have helped to build a wall of sound that is still reverbating. You've heard them on records, you've felt their influence directly or indirectly in much of the music that you've heard. Now they're here, working together to bring funk and fusion to new heights. Individually, these men have played on over 35 Grammy-winning records and have sold over 35 million records. MICHAEL HENDERSON – Michael played with several Motown artists (Fantastic Four, Detroit Emeralds, Billy Preston) from age 13, and toured with Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin by age 19 before being plucked away by Miles Davis. He spent 1970 - 75 providing a musical anchor for the Miles Davis band. He later became famous as a singer and songwriter - wrote and performed on several Top 10 hits, including Normon Connors' Grammy award-winning "You Are My Starship" as well as his own "Take Me I'm Yours" and "Wide Receiver". He has recorded with Phyllis Hyman, Bobby Womack, and Johnny Taylor, as well as producing The Dramatics. Michael's music, as well as the Miles Davis recordings he contributed to, have been sampled frequently during the last decade. It has been said of Miles Davis' Live-Evil album, "Mostly to blame for the raw music on Live-Evil was the addition of funk bassist Michael Henderson." Michael is emerging from a hiatus to lead the Children on the Cornero back into the central jazz/fusion/funk scene. NDUGU CHANCLER - Chancler is known not only as a world-class drummer and percussionist, but also a producer, composer, clinician and teacher. A three-time Grammy nominee, he has to his credit an extensive list of performances, recordings, original compositions and productions. As a studio musician, he has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Patrice Rushen, Hubert Laws, The Crusaders, Frank Sinatra, Weather Report, Lionel Richie, Kenny Rogers, Thelonious Monk and John Lee Hooker. He was the drummer on the biggest selling pop album by Michael Jackson, Thriller, providing the beat on “Billie Jean.” As a producer and songwriter, he has written hits for The Dazz Band and George Duke, and produced for Flora Purim, Bill Summers, Toki and his own solo recordings. He has co-produced recordings for Santana, The Crusaders, George Duke, Tina Turner, Joe Sample, Wilton Felder and The Meeting, the group he co-leads with Patrice Rushen and Ernie Watts. He is currently on the faculty in the jazz studies department at the Thornton School, he is on staff at the United States Percussion Camp at Eastern Illinois University, the Stanford University Jazz Workshop, Jazz America and the Thelonious Monk Foundation. MICHAEL WOLFF – Michael began his professional career at age 19 with Latin jazz pioneer Cal Tjader. In 1975, Wolff was hired by the great alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, which was followed by stints with Sonny Rollins, Airto Moreira and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra before Wolff became the musical director, arranger and pianist for singer Nancy Wilson. Taking his talents to television, Wolff became the musical director for the popular "Arsenio Hall Show." Wolff then jumped back into the jazz scene with a string of highly regarded recordings including Michael Wolff, Portraiture -- The Blues Period and two piano trio outings -- Jumpstart and 2AM -- with jazz drumming legend Tony Williams and the young upright bass star Christian McBride. After meeting Indian tabla master Badal Roy, Wolff formed the band known as Impure Thoughts, featuring saxophonist and former high school classmate Alex Foster (a longtime member of the "Saturday Night Live" band as well as a member of Jaco Pastorius' Word Of Mouth band, and currently musical director of the Mingus Big Band), percussionist Frank Colon, drummer Victor Jones and bassist John B. Williams (his bandmate from "The Arsenio Hall Show"), recently releasing their new album, “Intoxicate,” to wide acclaim. SONNY FORTUNE – Sonny began his career with with Elvin Jones and Frank Foster, eventually joining McCoy Tyner, during which period he started playing the soprano sax and cemented an already solid reputation as an instrumental innovator with his contributions on Tyner's albums Sahara, Song For My Lady, and Song of the New World. In 1974, he joined Miles Davis, recording four LPs, Big Fun, Agartha, Pangaea and Get Up With It. In June 1975 Sonny formed his own group, marking his debut as a leader with two critically-acclaimed LPs for A&M Horizon, Awakening and Waves of Dreams. He's had many albums released since then. Sonny's three Blue Note CD's received rave reviews. Four In One, his album of the music of Thelonious Monk, was released in the Fall of 1994. His second Blue Note CD, A Better Understanding was released September of 1995, and consists of all original material in groupings from duo to septet. Sonny's third CD for Blue Note, From Now On, was released in September 1996 and consists of both original material and compositions by other artists. The raves have continued and it was featured on many year-end Ten Best lists. Over the years Sonny has also recorded with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Oliver Nelson, George Benson and Nat Adderly, to name a few. Sonny's groups have always featured his own compositions, and he has toured around the world, including the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan. CBS TV's 48 Hours with Dan Rather did a feature on Sonny, which was broadcast in late 1993. He is a featured soloist on the soundtrack for the Jack Nicholson film, The Crossing Guard, and was the subject of a recent CBS Sunday Morning feature with Billy Taylor. He headlined the first Chicago Playboy Jazz Festival and was the featured jazz performer at the 1995 Atlanta Montreaux International Music Festival. His recent release on Shanachie, In the Spirit of John Coltrane, received acclaim in the April 2000 issues of Jazz Times and Downbeat). Sonny has had major media attention, with features on 48 Hours and CBS Sunday Morning. BADAL ROY - Badal Roy is the foremost exponent of tabla in jazz music. He has played with not only Miles Davis and John McLaughlin, but also artists as diverse as Herbie Mann, Dave Liebman, Don Cherry, Pharaoh Sanders, Dizzy Gillespie, Lonnie Liston Smith, Andreas Vollenweider, and Yoko Ono. He has been an integral part of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time since 1988 and is presently collaborating with Brazil s Duofel, an instrumental guitar duo. In addition to his own recordings, One in The Pocket, Asian Journal, (with Nana Vasconcelos and others), Basic Tendencies (with Mike Richmond and Glen Velez), Yantra (with Steve Gorn), and Songs for Sitar and Tabla (with Arooj Lazewal), Badal has made appearances on other classic recordings, such as On The Corner (Miles Davis – Columbia), Sun Belt (Herbie Mann – Atlantic), My Goals Beyond (John Mclaughlin – Ryko), Drum Ode (Dave Liebman – ECM) and Satisfied Shells. BARRY FINNERTY - Barry, a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, has had a long and distingushed career, collabotaing and recording with Chico Hamilton, Airto and Flora Purim, Hubert Laws, Joe Farrell, Ray Barretto, the Brecker Brothers(Heavy Metal Bebop), the Crusaders(Street Life), Miles Davis(The Man With The Horn), Billy Cobham, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Jon Hammond, Taj Mahal. Didier Lockwood, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Teruo Nakamura, and The Negatives, among others. He has toured frequently throughout the USA, Europe, and Japan, and released six albums as a solo artist. Barry works out of the San Francisco bay area, touring and recording worldwide. In addition to CHILDREN ON THE CORNER, Barry has recently toured Germany and recorded a live CD of TRAZZ (trance jazz), an electronic groove-based style with the Yamaha RS7000; and a spontaneous live jam band , DEEP DOWN & OUT. |
