THE BAND Julie Klein >> bass, vocals Al Gavett >> guitar Mack Preston >> drums When a singer or a band first hits the airwaves and grabs the public's imagination, the most natural thing is to compare them with popular artists or sounds already on the scene. Julie Klein and her South Florida rock band Zen Dog produce a sound on their debut CD, It Is What It Is, that's tough to compare to anyone else's. One thing is for certain: like the songstresses currently dominating radio's Top 40, this unique female singer has something to say. Songs like Touch generate a hook that is impossible to forget. "Is the answer in your touch?" are lyrics on the lips of college students all over South Florida. The song is a staple on stations like WVUM, University of Miami, and WNSU, Nova Southeastern University. It gets a lot of airplay on ZETA 94.9 FM, WKPX 88.5 and other rock stations. In a region so filled with diverse music styles, Zen Dog has attracted a loyal following of fans hungry for good rock and roll. The band performs regularly all over South Florida. The indie movie Fighting Gravity featured the single, Eliminate Your Mind, available on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are thoughtful, rather than the simple, predictable rhymes heard on radio waves today and forgotten tomorrow. "The world is sharp, it can make you be here now" is a wake-up call to the angst and pain of today's youth, balanced with the hope from wisdom gained through experience. While Zen Dog's sound and lyrics are meaty enough to make you think and take action - the mark of a good song - they make for commercial success as well. Burdine's of Florida Department Store chain has used Zen Dog's music in high-profile back-to-school promotions over the past several years. The look of the band is most welcome. Many bands are "girl bands" or all male, but Julie leads Zen Dog, with three groovy guys balancing out the act. Julie sings leads, plays bass and makes a great front woman with a knockout figure and a naturally curly auburn mane. Al Gavett, the newest member, lends a mysterious soulful vibe with his guitar. Mack Preston is an astonishing drummer, all arms, energy and artwork. He also sings backup. This promising band has generated much support from within the industry. The recording studio Criteria, home of the rich and famous of the music business, donated studio time for the CD. Grammy winner, Mike Couzzi, a recording engineer who worked on Santana's smash CD Supernatural, lent his skills to It Is What It Is, with an amazing sound the result. Even the professional cover design was a donated work of love and art. |
