SALTY THE POCKETKNIFE
SALTY THE POCKETKNIFE
Ok, name every band you can think of that had an actor in it. Ok, now name every band with an actor that didn't suck royal ass. My point? Even if you are sad enough to remember that Keanu Reeves's band was called Dogstar (notice I remember such trivial thing? I have no life), you can't remember even one song title, album title, or other band member I am sure. If you do remember anything about Dogstar, it's that they sucked dirty hobo balls. When actors try to be rockstars, it always ends up bad. So when I heard that Dustin Diamond (aka Screech from Saved By The Bell) had a band called Salty The Pocket Knife, the masochist in me had to check it out. So now for the shocker...are you sitting down? No, really...make sure you are sitting down. This ain't bad. In fact, there are a few songs I really like. Of all the actors in the fucking world, did anyone ever imagine that Screech would be the one to pull this thing off? I sure as hell never did. In fact, this band has a sound that makes me really want to see them live. Oh dear god, I need a drink. I think I like a band with an actor in it.

So how does it sound? Something like a mix between L7 and Mr. Bungle. The vocals are by a female that goes only by Rosebud. She has a early 90's punk feel to her voice that keeps this whole thing together and as grounded as this style can be. She also seems a little unstable. No, not as a musician, but mentally. Of course maybe that was her whole plan to start with. You devious little bitch! The music is almost a little too weird, like it's forced. For the most part though it just sounds like it would make a really great live show. The band seems a little on the political side of things. I can't exactly tell though since they didn't print anything in the booklet. In fact the whole packaging is my main complaint with this thing. There is no photo's, no lyrics, or anything that gives it an artistic feel at all. I did hear her mention Screech on "Pour No Gasoline" though, so that's cool. The only thing we get is track listing, credits, and thank you's. I would have liked to see a little more imagination put into this part. Of course that is really splitting hairs, since the music is what matters here and that part is pretty damn good. Now, it's not the greatest thing I have heard or anything, but worth a listen and I'm sure an amazing live show.

This thing is a little strange, so I recommend everyone check out an MP3 or two first before tossing down the cash. Although not the most musically grand or groundbreaking album by any means, this is the best album I have ever heard from a band with an actor. Is that Dustin on the intro to "Magic Garbage Ride"? Can I get a transcript? Thanks. Now if only I can catch his stand up comedy act when he comes through town next time.

SALTY THE POCKETKNIFE
This is a rather strange release. Luckily, I happen to like strange music. It's hard to not like this disc. Truth be told, when I first gave it a listen, I was like, "NAH!" But, I couldn't turn it off and I couldn't take it out of my CD player. I had to go through the entire release and by the time I got to track four, I was hooked. I was totally into this one.

Now, when I experience something like this, I usually end up coming up with some off the wall description based on what I'm hearing. I'm usually way off base with what I think. But, hey, I've gotta call 'em as I hear 'em. You may pick up this release and not hear anything that I heard. So, that's why you need to check it out for yourself and form your own opinion.

So, what did I hear? Well, at the core, I'd have to say that Salty The Pocketknife is a hard rock band. I'm also gonna throw the words alternative and experimental in here. Dead Kennedys, Rush, Ham Sandwich and Jackyl...those three bands came to mind. I don't know, it's like getting high without taking drugs. The best word to really use here is original. I can't honestly think of anyone else who's doing anything that might even come close to what Salty The Pocketknife is doing and, in this business, we all know that's a good thing. Like I said, you need to check this one out for yourself and form your own opinion. But, be warned, it might not float your boat when you first listen to it. But, you will call yourself a fan by the time you get though these twelve songs.
